Thing I'm most proud of
I'd like to say my w*lly but all my ex girlfriends would probably say that answer should go against the next question. Honestly it was 12 years ago now. I was the Company Commander of a composite TA Company on exercise in Gibraltar. One of my tasks was to deliver some form of Community action event. I organised a display for the local special needs school with displays of Army vehicles, well controlled rifle shooting, sending messages by radio, handling mortars and other weapons, plus entertainment from our Company piper. He was playing all the best tunes an experienced piper would play, all the fancy Marches, Strathspeys and Reels. Yet there was no reaction from any of the school children. So I said to the Piper, play those fun tunes like Happy birthday, The Flintstones and so on. He played the Flintstones and the reaction was unbelievable. The children started jumping, cheering and singing (though the guy in charge of the shooting got a bit worried!). One even borrowed the Sergeant Major's pace stick and went marching around the square encouraging his mates to join in. I saw the joy in all their faces and turned away to hide a tear or two that started to trickle down my face... something simple that turned the whole event around.
Thing I'm most embarrassed about
I don't know. There have been a number of inadvertent flashes of what's not worn under my kilt. One particular sweet old lady remarked to my Commanding Officer when planning one Remembrance parade in Brechin (bear in mind the memorial is atop a number of steps and the public watch at the bottom of the steps). "What isn't that lovely young officer who laid the wreath last year doing it again this year? (she must've been using binoculars – Ed. again) Last year when he laid his wreath, it brought back memories of Bruno my recently deceased Bull Mastiff!"
What I like most about myself
Physically - my eyes and my legs. Spiritually - my sense of humour, fun and fairness (not your hair then? – Ed again, again).
What I would change if I could
My sweet tooth and love of eating and drinking. It is such hard work having to exercise and eat sensibly to lose weight. I find it so hard to lose weight when afflicted by those terrible afflictions.
A word to sum me up
Och it needs more than one word ... choose one from patriotic, loyal, cuddly and fun ... I sound more like a dog... [Donald – no-one's gonna rub your tumtum!! - Ed]
