What do you do?
I'm an IT Consultant, in the area of software service delivery, and presently work with a large IT services company in Edinburgh.
Involvement with hospital radio
I joined in 1976 in response to an article in The Courier asking for volunteers, and am presently a programme producer and presenter, as well as doing occasional talks to local groups about the work of hospital radio. By the way, I don't come in at 2am to do my programmes - these ones are pre-recorded!
Favourite music
I have a wide range of tastes, from middle-of-the-road (Radio 2 style) to classical music. I particularly enjoy baroque chamber music.
First music bought
That was a long time ago! I was a teenager in the 1970s, so would be embarrassed to admit to some of my 45s collection!
Favourite things
My wife, Lorna, & my family, hospital radio, music & bell-ringing.
What does hospital radio mean to you?
It's all part of trying to make patients' stay in hospital that little bit easier. Some patients have no other visitors than the request collector from hospital radio, so I enjoy being part of a team who will hopefully make that stay in hospital just a little bit easier. If there is only one listener who benefited from the ward visits or radio programmes, then it's still worthwhile.
Funniest thing ever happened to you while involved in hospital radio?
I was visiting patients in Ninewells, and gave my usual introductory greeting to an elderly lady in ward 8. "Hello, I'm from hospital radio...." etc. She indicated she was hard of hearing, so I repeated a shorter, louder version "Hello, would you like a record request on the radio tonight?" She replied "What?" I repeated "Would You Like A Record On The Radio Tonight?" She replied "WHAT?" I repeated "WOULD YOU LIKE A RECORD ON THE RADIO TONIGHT?" Just then, her eyes brightened, she nodded and smiled. And then pointed to the radio handset beside the bed. "IT'S ALL RIGHT, SON, I'VE GOT A RADIO!"
